Mechanical Keyboard Switches Explained: Linear, Tactile, and Clicky

Reds, Browns, Blues, and the newer hall-effect switches — what actually changes under your fingers, and which type suits gaming versus typing.

Switch names look like a secret code, but they only describe a few traits: whether the press is smooth or bumpy, how loud it is, how heavy it feels, and how far you push before it registers. Everything else follows from those.

Linear switches: smooth all the way down

Linear switches — most famously 'Reds' — travel straight down with no bump and no click. They're quiet, consistent, and fast, which is why they're the common recommendation for gaming. Many players find rapid double-taps easier because nothing interrupts the keypress. The downside: without feedback, light typists sometimes bottom out harder than they need to.

Tactile switches: a bump to feel

Tactile switches — 'Browns' being the classic — add a small bump right at the point the key registers. You feel when the press counts without needing to slam the key to the bottom. They're a popular all-rounder for people who game and type in equal measure. They're slightly louder than linears but nowhere near clicky.

Clicky switches: loud and proud

Clicky switches — 'Blues' — add that bump plus an audible click. They're satisfying to type on and great for feedback, but the noise is real: not ideal for a shared room, an open mic, or an office. Gamers who love the sound use them; most competitive players don't.

Actuation force and travel

Force is measured in grams — lighter switches (around 45g) are easy to press quickly, heavier ones (55g and up) resist accidental presses. Travel is how far the key moves; 'speed' switches shorten the distance to actuation so keypresses register sooner. If you make a lot of fast inputs, a lighter, shorter switch can help.

Hall-effect and optical switches

Newer hall-effect (magnetic) switches let you set your own actuation point in software, and some support 'rapid trigger,' which resets the key the instant you lift. For competitive gaming this is a genuine advantage, not just a gimmick. Optical switches use light beams for actuation and are prized for durability and speed. Both cost more than standard mechanical switches.

Try before you commit

Feel is personal. A cheap switch tester or a trip to a store beats guessing from a chart. Many keyboards are also hot-swappable now, letting you change switches without soldering — a smart feature if you're not sure what you'll like long term.
